TUE

What is a TUE?

The TUE (Therapeutic Use Exemption) application process gives athletes a means of attaining approval to use a prescribed Prohibited Substance or Method for the treatment of a legitimate medical condition.

This process is in place to protect the rights of athletes to compete on a level playing field.

Applying for a TUE?

Each TUE application is assessed according to the same criteria as laid out in the International Standard for Therapeutic Use Exemptions. This provides fair and consistent standards for the approval of any medical use of a Prohibited Substance or Method.

Any athlete that is eligible for testing in the UK or abroad may need to apply for a TUE if they are prescribed a Prohibited Substance or Method by their doctor to treat a medical condition.

A TUE is only required by those athletes who are competing at a certain standard within their sport.  To find out if you are at a level of competition that will require a TUE please contact your sport's National Governing Body (NGB).

Before applying for a TUE, you should check with your doctor to see if there are any permitted alternative treatments or medications.

If you are required to complete a TUE application then it is necessary that you complete the correct form fully and accurately.

There are two types of TUE application;

  • Abbreviated TUE (ATUE)

  • Standard TUE (STUE)

Abbreviated TUE (ATUE)

The ATUE application is required for all local glucocorticosteroid injections and the following inhaled asthma medications:

  • The following Beta 2 Agonists - Formoterol, Salbutamol, Salmeterol and Terbutaline

  • Inhaled Glucocorticosteroids - Beclometasone, Fluticasone, Budesonide.
NOTE: Ear Drops, Eye Drops, Nasal sprays and topical preparations containing glucocorticosteroids do not require an ATUE at the time of publication.

Fully and appropriately completed ATUE applications will be considered valid on receipt by the relevant authorising body.

Incomplete or illegible applications will not be approved and will be returned to the athlete.

Standard TUE (STUE)

The STUE application is required for Prohibited Substances or Methods that are not covered by the ATUE process. These applications are reviewed by the Therapeutic Use Exemption Committee (TUEC) which consists of an independent panel of medical practitioners.

For STUE applications it takes time for your application to be reviewed by the TUEC.  To ensure a swift process it is essential that you submit all the relevant medical information relating to your medical treatment.  Where appropriate please provide details of medical examinations and tests conducted and details of any permitted alternative treatments trialled.
