The process for applying for a TUE will be the same as the process outlined earlier in this manual. However, for athletes attending some major events, there are some important considerations outlined below:
Olympic athletes will need to ensure that where their NGB or UK Sport may have dealt with their TUE in the past, that their TUE application and related documentation is sent to their IF.
It is important that you inform your team doctor of any current TUEs or of your need for a TUE.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) also requires all Olympic athletes to undergo clinical tests for the treatment of Beta-2 Agonists, used to treat asthma or exercise-induced asthma. The result of each examination needs to be sent to the IOC prior to the Olympic Games. The Olympic Medical Institute (OMI) in the UK will coordinate these tests for GB athletes and will prepare the relevant documentation for the IOC.
Paralympic athletes must use an International Paralympic Committee (IPC) TUE application form that can be found on the IPC website at www.paralympic.org or at www.didglobal.com.
For the IPC, athletes are expected to submit their TUE applications well in advance of the Paralympic Games, for example, in 2004 applications were due in May for the September event. All Paralympic athletes are advised to submit TUE applications to the IPC as soon as they are prescribed a Prohibited Substance or Method.
It is important that you inform your team doctor of any current TUEs or of your need for a TUE.
Contact UK Sport’s Drug-Free Sport team for more information leading up to the event on 0800 528 0004.
Commonwealth Games athletes will need to submit their TUE applications to their IF prior to the event and should notify their Commonwealth Games team manager or team doctor of any TUE requirements.
Always carry a copy of your TUE certificate and the prescription given to you by your doctor.
