At the UK School Games in Glasgow, 9-10 September 2006, history was made with the 100%ME zone being set-up at different locations during the same event.
A zone was set-up in the foyer at the Tollcross leisure centre for the swimming event which ran the whole day. A signature panel was created for all the athletes to pledge their support to clean and fair sport by signing it. Guin Batten, a 100% ME ambassador also attended the swimming and signed the signature panel. Around 200 swimmers were reached on the day.
A zone was also set-up at the gymnastics which took place at the Kelvin Hall International Arena. This was a small event with only around 50 gymnasts taking part. The zone was set-up in the athlete area and most of the coaches visited the zone during the afternoon. These athletes were all very young and with a short programme it was difficult to reach the athletes individually but talking to the coaches were equally important.
The zone was set-up in the athlete area at the table tennis and fencing at Scotstoun where athletes signed the signature panel pledging their support to drug-free sport and played the anti-doping quiz. Some of the young volunteers also played the quiz and although they didn’t compete on the day most of them take part in other sports. During the course of the morning another zone was set-up at the athletics track, next to the stands designated for the athletes.
One table with the banners and education resources was set-up and around 400 athletes were reached at this zone. Competitions were run during the day asking questions on anti-doping topics, playing games with the advice cards and testing their knowledge on the testing procedures. Kate Allenby and Georgina Harland, 100%ME Ambassadors also visited the zone and discussed their experiences as Olympic athletes.
The philosophy and purpose of the 100%ME programme was also an important aspect to get across to the athletes and the outreach team succeeded in doing that, spreading the message to 720 athletes and support staff.
